Susan E: “Tell me and I’ll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I’ll understand”
As a teacher for K-12 grades, I have learned that where there is a will there is a way through individualized instruction. I have also learned that motivation is the key to learning any subject. For most students, motivation is attained through the application of instructions to real life situations. Throughout my long teaching career, I have found that the love of learning is enhanced through the simplification of subject matter. This simplification of the learning process is obtained through providing lessons that accommodate all learning styles through visual prompts such as graphic organizers, auditory prompts demonstrated through Socratic questioning, and kinesthetic prompts which call for student led hands on project based learning. These projects can empower students to produce a product that demonstrates his or her learning the concepts for any subject. I have prepared high school students for success in taking the TAKS standardized test and recently prepared students to take the STAAR standardized tests. As a student teacher, I assisted in the preparation of students for GED testing as well. Beginning this month, I will be part of a team writing for Pearson publishing for the purpose of compiling tests to be used in various forms of testing within public schools and other educational facilities. I am available to teach in East Austin, South Austin, Elgin, and Bastrop area of central Texas.

Christine K: Having graduated from UT with a Spanish teaching major, I am familiar with various teaching techniques and methods in language acquisition. Further, I also believe some of these methods I’ve adopted apply to other subjects as well. I’ve practiced these methods when I have previously tutored students. I prefer teaching one-on-one or in a small group setting because it allows me to adjust each student’s level in the subject of interest and to his/her learning absorption. However, even though every student is different and may require a different learning approach from another, I believe in always being patient, constantly encouraging, and trying to find and show a real interest or something fun in what my students are learning. Teaching has always been a pleasure and a meaningful experience for me. I’ve worked, both teaching and volunteering, with children from the age of six to adults, and I have taken each of my students’ progress personally.

My 7+ years of diverse teaching experience have shaped me into a unique and creative educator who is flexible and able to adapt instruction to meet individual student learning needs and styles. I have teaching experience at all levels: elementary, middle, high school, and even college. Last year I taught 4th graders how to write expository and persuasive essays, and in doing so perfected the art of scaffolding. Matthew W: I completed my bachelor’s degree with honors in Government, History, Russian/Eastern European Studies, and Sociology at The University of Texas at Austin. I then went on to complete a master’s degree in Social Sciences at The University of Chicago, and obtained 36 hours of additional graduate credit in Education at The University of St. Thomas. I am currently enrolled as a first year student at The University of Texas School of Law. My background in education, which has spanned four years, afforded me the opportunity to work with a wide variety of students. This has included students in their initial classes at community college, high school students enrolled in early college classes, special education resource and inclusion settings, and students who were attending both high school and middle school while completing substance abuse rehabilitation. I have ample experience in teaching ELA, social studies (world and US history, government, and social studies electives), and college-readiness classes. Working with students at the individual and small group level has been a wonderful experience for me as it allows me to really get to know the interests of a student and how I can relate subject matter to those interests.

Lindsay G: I am a very hardworking, positive, and devoted individual who accomplishes anything I put my mind to with a smile on my face. I have a natural ability for working with children, especially the exceptional ones, and I love collaborating with others who share this passion. I have lived in the Austin area for seven years, graduating from high school a full year early and subsequently being accepted into the University of Texas. I graduated from the university in May of 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Learning and Development, as well as both my Generalist EC-6 and Special Education EC-12 teaching certificates. Most of my experience stems from the rigorous internships and student teaching positions I held while completing my degree at the University of Texas. However, I also have experience in one-to-one tutoring, as I have been a private tutor for a student in Austin for the past two years. I feel confident tutoring most subjects to all types of students, especially those with special needs. I look forward to making a difference by helping each individual student successfully reach their individual goals.
