Tutors Serving Central Austin:
Fred L: After obtaining my Master of Science degree, I worked in the semiconductor engineering field for several years and then moved to the education field because of my passion for making a difference in the lives of the students in my community through education. Over the years, I have worked with several hundred students in various capacities and I still enjoy helping each individual student understand a concept and watch him/her succeed in school. As a teacher/tutor, I have worked with students in various classroom settings, small groups and 1 on 1. I enjoy the 1 on 1 setting the most because I am able to teach each student more effectively based on his/her strengths, weaknesses, interests and learning style.

I have teaching experience at all levels: elementary, middle, high school, and even college. Matthew W: I completed my bachelor’s degree with honors in Government, History, Russian/Eastern European Studies, and Sociology at The University of Texas at Austin. I then went on to complete my master’s degree in Social Sciences at The University of Chicago, and obtained 36 hours of additional graduate credit in education at The University of St. Thomas. I am currently enrolled as a first year student at The University of Texas School of Law. My background in education, which has spanned four years, afforded me the opportunity to work with a wide variety of students. This has included students in their initial classes at community college, high school students enrolled in early college classes, special education resource and inclusion settings, and students who were attending both high school and middle school while completing substance abuse rehabilitation. I have ample experience in teaching ELA, social studies (world and US history, government, and social studies electives), and college-readiness classes. Working with students at the individual and small group level has been a wonderful experience for me as it allows me to really get to know the interests of a student and how I can relate subject matter to those interests.

Lindsay G: I am a very hardworking, positive, and devoted individual who accomplishes anything I put my mind to with a smile on my face. I have a natural ability for working with children, especially the exceptional ones, and I love collaborating with others who share this passion. I have lived in the Austin area for seven years, graduating from high school a full year early and subsequently being accepted into the University of Texas. I graduated from the university in May of 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Learning and Development, as well as both my Generalist EC-6 and Special Education EC-12 teaching certificates. Most of my experience stems from the rigorous internships and student teaching positions I held while completing my degree at the University of Texas. However, I also have experience in one-to-one tutoring, as I have been a private tutor for a student in Austin for the past two years. I feel confident tutoring most subjects to all types of students, especially those with special needs. I look forward to making a difference by helping each student reach their individual goals.

Grant W: At the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), I double-majored in Chemistry and Psychology, earning both a B.S. and a B.A., respectively, and minored in Biological Science. For the past three years, I have tutored primarily college students as a teaching assistant both at USM and UT-Austin, where I am presently employed as a teaching assistant. I approach tutoring the way one might approach sales by establishing a common ground with the student on which I venture to convince the student that the imminent material is personally relevant and compelling. Because of the inherent difficulty in making this sale, I emphasize patience and understanding in my efforts to engage students on a personal level by making the material relevant to each student individually. Of course, this is where private, one-on-one tutoring is invaluable. My goal as a private tutor is to, as quickly as possible, develop a rapport with students while keeping an evolving eye on the most efficient route of captivating students’ interests in order to effectively and succinctly communicate the information needed by students so that they may confidently meet the demanding rigors that define modern academic success.

Karen M: My work in the field of education spans many years and my students have ranged in age from preschoolers to adults. I truly believe that providing students with what they need to succeed is my calling and passion in life. Recently, I returned to school to continue my own education and obtained a Master’s degree in Education with Literacy Specialization so that I may better serve my students. Currently, I am working with three terrific Elementary school students in order to improve their reading and literacy development. In addition, I volunteer as an adult ESL instructor in South Austin. I enjoy 1 on 1 tutoring as it allows me to build rapport with each student and learn about their individual strengths, interests and learning style. I customize my instruction based on this profile to help each student acquire skills, confidence, and achievement in their area of need or enrichment. In addition, I enjoy using a variety of engaging, hands on learning materials that assist students’ in making their own learning discoveries. Although I specialize in reading, writing and literacy development, I am also qualified to teach Science and Math at the elementary level and Social Studies at the elementary and middle school levels. In addition, since I have a high level of proficiency in Spanish, I am able to provide instruction to preschoolers through High School students in Spanish as well.
